Moby Dick/Essex Illustrations

Here are the print versions of two out of four illustrations that I did for Cobblestone Magazine for a story about the relationship between Melville’s writing of Moby Dick and the real incident of the sinking of the whaling ship, the Essex. The first is the opening spread.

Latest Commissioned Work

The last in a series of four, the Bluegill school painting was commissioned by Badger Printing as promotion for the 2017 Spring fishing opener. Room was left on the top and bottom for text and logos.

Life Drawing – Gunnar Sund

Occasionally, I draw with my students in Life Drawing/Figure Drawing class. On this day, I did a portrait of one of my students and advisees, Gunnar. I did not have the range of pastel colors that I prefer but used what my students had available to them so it only seems fair.

Animated Gif of Painting Process

The GIF represented here is flashing 70 layers of digital painting in fractions of seconds. Not sure how well it represents my labor, but it is fun to watch.

Sierra Club – Colorado Posters

Wolves of Douglas County helped sponsor a showing of Medicine of the Wolf by Julia Huffman in Madison last October for which I designed a few posters, one of which was used. Recently, Sierra Club, Colorado picked up the two unused designs for two different commemorative posters for screenings on two separate campuses, Breckenridge and Spring Valley. Here are the posters as they ended up out west.

Work for Dunbarton Oaks

A reconstruction of a bedecked elder as he may have appeared has preoccupied my artistic time lately, based on a site in modern day Panama at Sitio Conte. I am pleased to have collaborated with a colleague on these which were painstaking in their requirements for accuracy of detail, particularly in the ornaments, pendants, and jewelry.
